Demystifying HK Parts - OEM Versus Contract Manufacturing - A Case Study with Fixed Stocks

Posted by GSC on 2/17/2020 to Parts Identification
For us to see one of the clearest comparisons between the characteristics of factory and contract manufactured HK parts we can look at the nuanced differences of the features of the MP5A2 fixed stocks that are most commonly available today:

OEM MP5A2 Fixed Stock

MP5A2OEMStock

  • Made on genuine HK manufacturing equipment in HK factories (i.e., made in Germany)
  • Black with smooth texture/finish
  • No steel back plate
  • No buffer
  • Are date coded
  • Fits all MP5s and MP5 clones
  • Premium price

Contract Manufactured MP5A2 Fixed Stock

MP5A2ContractStock

  • Made on genuine HK manufacturing equipment in non-HK factories (i.e., made in Turkey, Pakistan, Malaysia, etc.)
  • Black with slightly rougher texture/finish
  • No steel back plate
  • No buffer
  • Are not date coded
  • Fits all MP5s and MP5 clones
  • Reduced price
Conclusions

There are certainly some tangible differences between OEM and contract manufactured HK parts when one compares MP5A2 fixed stocks. However, the distinctions between the parts are subtle and almost entirely cosmetic.

This is typically the level of differences a buyer can expect to find when comparing OEM and contract manufactured HK parts (at least when contract manufacturers are not intentionally trying to build some components that are not entirely HK factory spec to ensure people are required to return to them for future purchases [*cough* Zenith Firearms *cough*]).

Someday soon we will continue this discussion by looking at other similar part types, such as trigger housings...
